Prisoners of Pain ….. God's Grace
I looked through the
barred windows of Chalatenango gang prison in El Salvador. There was no look
of anticipation, no look of hope, nor even any smiles on the faces of the
prisoners crowded into their small cells. These forgotten and lonely men
simply looked back at us with blank stares. The prison guards skeptical eyes
said it all. And, though I had witnessed many miracles in many prisons in
The United States and Mexico, I couldn’t help but wonder if the Gospel
message could penetrate these hearts. Within a few hours we would have our
answer.
My name is Tom Flaskerud. Twenty six years ago while I was Pastor of a
church in Bend, Oregon, God placed a burden in my heart for prison
ministry and seventeen years ago it became a fulltime mission for my wife
Carla, and I. We organized “The Freedom Team”, and began taking the message
of Jesus Christ to prisons throughout the West and Mexico. Now the
Government of El Salvador has invited us to bring this message of love,
hope, and forgiveness to the prisons in a country ravaged by decades of
violence.
During our visits to the federal prisons in El Salvador, God worked
wonderfully, and over 2600 men and women prisoners chose a better way. The
saved included many members of the 18th Street and MS gangs, who have a
strong presence in the United States. Many of them even defied the authority
of their gang leaders in determination to live a life of freedom and
hope.
Our team members, some of whom have first hand knowledge of prison life,
were given unparalleled access to government buildings and prisons. This
allowed us to gain interviews with prison officials, government
representatives, and gang members as well as the right to film the power
explosion events and prisoner reactions. In our film you will see that as we
presented the Gospel, the Holy Spirit quickly began to work on hearts
desperate for change. Hard hearts softened and tears began to scald the
cheeks of inmates looking for hope and peace.
So why am I telling you about all of this. First of all, I covet your
prayers. Secondly, I would like to share this documentary film, “Prisoners
of Pain” with you and many others.
